Not Darkness, but the Path of Light: Youth Leadership at Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN)

On 10 October 2025, on a bright morning in Kathmandu, we visited Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN) as part of the Right Here Right Now (RHRN2) program. Representatives from Right Here Right Now Bangladesh and various youth-led organizations participated in this visit.
Several notable youth leaders from Bangladesh were part of the delegation. Among them were Md. Mehedi Hasan, youth leader and CEO & Founder of Srijonshil Gaibandha and Ritu-Gaibandha, bringing valuable experience in youth leadership and social change; Sadia Jannat Jussi, Project and Campaign Development Officer from Hopes of Humanity Centre; Ganga Rani Roy, General Member of Jhankar Youth Cultural Organization; Md. Emon Hosen, Youth Advocate and Executive Committee Member of ABCD; Toushin Ahmed Sohel, Assistant Manager (PMEL) at RHSTEP; and Jisan Mahmud, SRHR Specialist at BRAC and representative of RHRN 2. The entire visit offered a unique opportunity for learning, experience sharing, and gaining fresh perspectives on youth leadership.
BYAN is a unique youth-led organization that works to ensure the rights, leadership, and dignified life opportunities for visually impaired and blind youth. Its guiding principle is “Disability is not inability.” From the moment one enters the BYAN office, it is evident that this is more than an organization; it is a symbol of youth confidence, creativity and determination.
The organization was founded in 2012 by a group of visually impaired youth leaders and was officially registered in 2015. Today, BYAN operates in 20 districts and 20 local networks across Nepal, aiming to promote social inclusion, education, healthcare, employment, and leadership development for visually impaired youth.
BYAN works across seven main areas: health, equality, mental health, education, employment, accessibility, and leadership development. Their approach is rights-based, focusing on empowerment rather than charity. The organization actively creates accessible environments in government offices, educational institutions, and public transportation for visually impaired individuals. BYAN has also successfully advocated for the reasonable accommodation policy, ensuring extra time for exams or work-related tasks for visually impaired persons.
In addition, BYAN provides leadership training, skill development, and training on accessible digital tools for visually impaired youth. Special mentorship programs for women strengthen female leadership. During the visit, one statement stood out:
“Knowledge in mind is one thing, skill in hand is another.”
This emphasizes that learning is not merely acquiring knowledge, but having the ability to apply it effectively.

BYAN has also integrated disability and SRHR, demonstrating that visually impaired youth have full rights to learn about, discuss, and lead in matters of sexual and reproductive health. Their focus on women’s leadership is commendable, providing not just opportunities but also financial and emotional support to make leadership sustainable.
From this visit, we learned that inclusion is not about charity, but about ensuring opportunities and rights. BYAN has shown that leadership does not come from sight, but from vision. Their work teaches us that to see the light of change, one does not need eyes just trust and courage.
In the context of Bangladesh, BYAN’s experience is highly instructive. Disability-inclusive SRHR programs can be implemented for youth with disabilities, collaboration between local governments and youth organizations can be strengthened, and BYAN’s expertise in digital accessibility can serve as inspiration for other organizations.
By the end of the visit, our takeaway was clear: BYAN is more than an organization; it is a movement. It proves that even without sight, society can be transformed through vision, courage, and inclusive leadership. BYAN stands as a unique example of youth leadership, rights-based practices, and inclusive perspectives, offering valuable lessons for youth organizations in Bangladesh.

কাঠমান্ডুর Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN) দেখিয়েছে অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক সমাজ গড়তে দৃষ্টিহীন তরুণদের নেতৃত্বই হতে পারে সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী উদাহরণ। এই ভিজিটে উঠে এসেছে নতুন শেখা, নতুন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি, এবং প্রতিবন্ধী অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক SRHR বাস্তবায়নের অনুপ্রেরণামূলক গল্প।
১০ অক্টোবর ২০২৫, কাঠমান্ডুর এক উজ্জ্বল সকালে আমরা Right Here Right Now (RHRN2) প্রোগ্রামের অংশ হিসেবে ভিজিট করি Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN)। সফরে অংশগ্রহণকারী ছিলেন Right Here Right Now Bangladesh এবং বিভিন্ন youth-led organization এর প্রতিনিধি।
ভিজিটে উপস্থিত ছিলেন বাংলাদেশের যুব নেতৃত্বের কয়েকজন অনন্য ব্যক্তি। তাদের মধ্যে ছিলেন মো. মেহেদী হাসান, ইউথ লিডার ঋতু-গাইবান্ধা এবং সৃজনশীল গাইবান্ধা’র প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা ও প্রতিষ্ঠাতা, যিনি তরুণ নেতৃত্ব ও সামাজিক পরিবর্তনের বিষয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অভিজ্ঞতা সঙ্গে নিয়ে এসেছিলেন। এছাড়া উপস্থিত ছিলেন সাদিয়া জান্নাত জুসি, প্রজেক্ট ও ক্যাম্পেইন ডেভেলপমেন্ট অফিসার, হোপস অব হিউম্যানিটি সেন্টার থেকে; গঙ্গা রানী রায়, ঝংকার ইয়ুথ কালচারাল অর্গানাইজেশনের সাধারণ সদস্য; মো. ইমন হোসেন, যুব অ্যাডভোকেট এবং ABCD এর এক্সিকিউটিভ কমিটি সদস্য; তৌসিন আহমেদ সোহেল, সহকারী ব্যবস্থাপক (PMEL), আরএইচস্টেপ; এবং জিসান মাহমুদ, ব্র্যাকের SRHR বিশেষজ্ঞ ও RHRN 2-এর প্রতিনিধি। পুরো সফরটি ছিল শেখা, অভিজ্ঞতা বিনিময় এবং তরুণ নেতৃত্বের ভিন্ন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি উপলব্ধির এক অসাধারণ সুযোগ।
BYAN হলো একটি অনন্য যুব নেতৃত্বাধীন সংগঠন, যা দৃষ্টিহীন ও দৃষ্টি-প্রতিবন্ধী তরুণদের অধিকার, নেতৃত্ব এবং মর্যাদাপূর্ণ জীবন নিশ্চিত করতে কাজ করছে। তাদের মূলমন্ত্র হলো “Disability is not inability”। অফিসে প্রবেশের প্রথম মুহূর্তেই বোঝা যায় এটি শুধু একটি সংগঠন নয়, বরং তরুণদের আত্মবিশ্বাস, সৃজনশীলতা এবং দৃঢ় সংকল্পের প্রতীক।
২০১২ সালে কিছু তরুণ দৃষ্টিহীন নেতা এই সংগঠনটির সূচনা করেন। ২০১৫ সালে এটি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে নিবন্ধিত হয় এবং বর্তমানে নেপালের ২০টি জেলা ও ২০টি স্টেকে কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করছে। সংস্থার মূল লক্ষ্য হলো দৃষ্টিহীন তরুণদের সামাজিক অন্তর্ভুক্তি, শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য, কর্মসংস্থান এবং নেতৃত্ব বিকাশ নিশ্চিত করা।
BYAN স্বাস্থ্য, সমতা, মানসিক স্বাস্থ্য, শিক্ষা, কর্মসংস্থান, অ্যাক্সেসিবিলিটি এবং নেতৃত্ব বিকাশ এই সাতটি মূল ক্ষেত্রে কাজ করছে। তাদের পদ্ধতি চ্যারিটি নয়, বরং rights-based approach, অর্থাৎ অধিকারভিত্তিক এবং ক্ষমতায়নমূলক। সংগঠনটি সরকারি অফিস, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান ও গণপরিবহনে দৃষ্টিহীনদের জন্য বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ পরিবেশ তৈরি করছে। এছাড়া সরকারকে উদ্বুদ্ধ করেছে reasonable accommodation policy বাস্তবায়নে, যার ফলে দৃষ্টিহীন ব্যক্তি পরীক্ষা বা চাকরির ক্ষেত্রে অতিরিক্ত সময় পাচ্ছেন।
BYAN নেতৃত্ব প্রশিক্ষণ, স্কিল ডেভেলপমেন্ট এবং অ্যাক্সেসিবল ডিজিটাল টুলস ব্যবহারের প্রশিক্ষণও প্রদান করছে। নারীদের জন্য রয়েছে বিশেষ mentorship প্রোগ্রাম, যা নারী নেতৃত্বকে শক্তিশালী করছে। ভিজিটের সময় একটি কথা বিশেষভাবে মনে রাখার মতো ছিল “Knowledge in mind is one thing, skill in hand is another।” এটি বোঝায়, শেখা শুধু জানা নয়, বরং সেই জ্ঞানকে কাজে লাগানোর ক্ষমতাই আসল দক্ষতা।

BYAN disability এবং SRHR এই দুইটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ইস্যুকে একত্রিত করেছে। তাদের কাজ প্রমাণ করেছে যে, দৃষ্টিহীন তরুণরাও যৌন ও প্রজনন স্বাস্থ্য অধিকার বিষয়ে বলার, শেখার এবং নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার পূর্ণ অধিকার রাখে। নারী নেতৃত্বের উপর মনোযোগও প্রশংসনীয়। তারা শুধু নেতৃত্বের সুযোগই তৈরি করছে না, বরং নারীদের আর্থিক ও মানসিক সহায়তা প্রদান করে নেতৃত্বকে টেকসই করছে।
এই ভিজিট থেকে আমরা শিখেছি, অন্তর্ভুক্তি মানে দয়া নয়, বরং সুযোগ এবং অধিকার নিশ্চিত করা। BYAN দেখিয়েছে, নেতৃত্ব দৃষ্টিশক্তি দিয়ে নয়, দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি দিয়ে আসে। তাদের কাজ আমাদের শিক্ষা দিয়েছে যে, পরিবর্তনের আলো দেখতে চোখ নয় লাগে শুধু বিশ্বাস আর সাহস। বাংলাদেশে BYAN-এর অভিজ্ঞতা অত্যন্ত শিক্ষণীয়। প্রতিবন্ধী যুবদের জন্য অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক SRHR কর্মসূচি নেওয়া যেতে পারে, স্থানীয় সরকার ও যুব সংগঠনগুলোর মধ্যে সহযোগিতা বাড়ানো প্রয়োজন, এবং digital accessibility বিষয়ে BYAN-এর অভিজ্ঞতা আমাদের জন্য অনুপ্রেরণা হতে পারে।
এই ভিজিট শেষে আমাদের উপলব্ধি হলো BYAN কেবল একটি সংগঠন নয়, এটি এক আন্দোলন, যা প্রমাণ করেছে যে দৃষ্টি না থাকলেও, দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি ও সাহস দিয়ে সমাজ পরিবর্তন করা সম্ভব। তরুণ নেতৃত্ব, অধিকারভিত্তিক কর্মপদ্ধতি এবং অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি BYAN-কে করেছে এক অনন্য উদাহরণ, যা বাংলাদেশের যুব সংগঠনগুলোর জন্য শিক্ষণীয়।
